The Faculty of Psychology, in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine at Gunadarma University, held an international seminar on “Human Cognition in the Digital Era: Memory, Digital Reading, and Immersive Learning,” featuring expert speakers from Université Bourgogne Europe and Universitas Gunadarma.
This event was held both offline at the Auditorium of Campus F8, Gunadarma University, and online via Zoom meeting on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Seminar participants consisted of lecturers, students, and other participants from outside of Universitas Gunadarma.
An Overview of the International Seminar
The digital age has brought fundamental changes to the way humans think, learn, and interact. Therefore, these shifts and developments raise important questions about human cognition in its interaction with the latest technologies.
This seminar was held to present the latest research findings to enrich our understanding of how the brain adapts to the digital environment, while also highlighting the challenges and opportunities that exist.
The seminar featured three speakers. The first speaker is Professor Annie Vinter from Université Bourgogne Europe, with the topic of discussion being Memorizing object locations in adults: The role of adaptive-relevant information. On this occasion, Prof. Vinter discussed digital memory through tablets. Specifically, this research shows that in adult subjects, both living entities and entities that act as threats significantly improve memory location abilities in humans.
The second speaker was Professor Thierry Baccino from Université Bourgogne Europe, with the topic Reading on Digital Devices. On this occasion, Prof. Baccino explained the importance of perception, attention, and individual text comprehension to encourage re-evaluation of how the brain processes information in different formats.
The third speaker was drg. Rena Fuji Erin Setyawati, M. Med. Ed Universitas Gunadarma, who discussed Immersive Learning in Medical Education for Shaping Future Doctors. On this occasion, drg. Rena explained the importance of understanding and optimizing the interaction between humans and technology, particularly in education. The development of cutting-edge technology—in this case, extended reality (XR)—for education needs to consider not only its technical capabilities but also the cognitive characteristics and learning styles of the current generation. It is hoped that this seminar will increase understanding of the concept of human cognition and its relationship to the use of digital technology, particularly in relation to memory, digital reading, and immersive learning.
